People in Yeadon and Guiseley are being urged to attend a meeting to call for improvements to bus services in the area.

The meeting, at Yeadon Town Hall on Monday at 2pm, has been called by Metro Chairman Ryk Downes, to discuss changes to the 966 service.

The meeting was called in the wake of widespread anger at cuts to the 33, 97, and 966 services. Coun Downes, who is also a Yeadon councillor, has spoken of his own disappointment at the lack of consultation before the changes were introduced and he has been looking at a number of options to improve the situation.

He has stressed how important it is that local people should turn out for the meeting - and his call has been reiterated by the Aireborough Civic Society.

Civic Society spokesman Clive Woods said he hoped Metro would come to the meeting with good news about restoring an important local service taken away in November with so little notice.

He said: "It is vitally important that a large number of people come to this follow-up meeting - so that Metro can be quite clear that their actions were unacceptable."

The civic society has criticised Metro for taking away the service without consultation, and for not considering the effect of removing the only Access bus for Guiseley and most of Yeadon.

The body says the new timetable only appeared in bus shelters the day before the cuts were made, and the service was taken away at the worst possible time of the year for residents living in hilly areas.
