Teenagers in West Yorkshire are being urged to help tackle the problem of drugs on their streets by writing a song.

West Yorkshire Police have teamed up with Northern Rail, and its NorthernTrax initiative, to launch a song-writing competition - 3 Minute Wonders.

The competition, which is being backed by Leeds singer Corinne Bailey Rae, pictured, encourages young people under 19 to write a song about the fight against drugs.

She said: "Helping raise awareness amongst teenagers about the danger of drugs is vital, and combining this with the chance to showcase local song-writing talent is a great idea."

West Yorkshire Police's inspector Janet Ballance said: "West Yorkshire Police see the effects of drugs on young people day in day out, so we're always looking for new ways to help educate them about the dangers."

Budding song-writers have until Friday, February 8, 2008, to get their entries in.

The winner will get the chance to perform alongside Madness and The Stranglers at the Settle Music Festival.

Entries should be sent to, 3 Minute Wonders competition, Local Policing Department, Youth & Schools, PO Box 9, Laburnum Road, Wakefield, WF1 3QP or e-mail them to Kevin.chippendale @westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
