Specialist e-learning provider, The Virtual College in Ilkley, this year took a "green" lesson from its own book by substituting printed Christmas cards with on-line greetings - and donating the savings to charity.

Airedale NHS Charitable Trust's Special Care Baby Unit at Airedale general hospital is benefiting as a direct result of the Christmas carbon footprint-reducing gesture.

It has been made in support of the work of the Virtual College's Safeguarding Children e-Academy, which delivers online training courses UK-wide.

Another arm of the college, the Lean Healthcare Academy, also works in close partnership with Airedale hospital in setting up "Lean" activities that focus on the elimination of wasteful practices and enhance patient care.

The academy has its own in-house training facility at the hospital.
