Police are urging people not to ruin their New Year by advertising Christmas gifts to burglars.

Often people leave the packaging of any gifts received - such as computers - outside their homes, letting burglars know what they could steal.

Detective Inspector Duncan MacNay, West Yorkshire Police Crime Reduction Officer, said: "Obviously we don't want to spoil people's fun but we want them to use their common sense and reduce the opportunity for crime to be committed.

"There are a number of small things which can be done that make a massive difference.

"Firstly, once you've opened your presents this year, don't leave the packaging on view outside your home. Burglars will be scanning the area for empty boxes that will have contained expensive items they could steal.

"Secondly, make sure you mark any new property, such as televisions, DVDs and computers. Householders can use a DNA marking system or UV pen to postcode their gifts and then record and keep the serial numbers in a safe place. Smaller items like jewellery should be photographed."

Det Insp MacNay also urged festive revellers to plan a safe route home and let friends or family know when to expect them.

He said: "We don't want you to be unsociable at Christmas but we do want you to have a safe Christmas and a crime-free New Year."

Police officers and police community support officers will be on the look out for any tell-tale signs that householders may have expensive new items in their homes and will be posting leaflets to any who may be at risk.
