A NINE-YEAR-OLD has died after being struck by lightning on a football field.
Blackpool Police was called shortly after 5.05pm today to reports of a child being injured on a football field, off School Road.
It is believed the boy had been struck by lightning.
Emergency services rushed the nine-year-old to hospital, but he sadly died a short time later.
The boys family have been informed and are being supported by officers.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the situation.
Detective Superintendent Nick Connaughton of Lancashire Police said: "This is a truly devastating incident and our thoughts are wholeheartedly with the family and friends of the young boy, who has passed away, at this very sad and distressing time."
A road closure was in place on School Road earlier today, between Common Edge Road and Midgeland Road, but that has since been lifted.
Officers have also issued an appeal for witnesses.
