A WOMAN who died in a Bradford park last week has now officially been named.

An inquest into the death of Kaneez Akhter was opened at Bradford Coroners’ Court yesterday.

Coroners’ officer Laura Sinfield told the hearing that Mrs Akhter was a married, 58-year-old woman who had been born in Pakistan.

Discussing the brief circumstances around her death, she said witnesses had reported seeing a female on fire on a footpath between the Bradford Moor Golf Club and Killinghall Primary School, at around 9am on Monday, May 3.

Emergency services were called, but Mrs Akhter was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Her identity was confirmed by a forensic orthodontist.

Assistant coroner Raja Mahmood opened the inquest and said it would resume in August.

He requested a number of reports, including a post-mortem and toxicology report, as well as ones from her GP, the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, police and the fire service.

There was a heavy police presence in the Myra Shay area last week as the tragic news unfolded.

A white forensics tent was put up around the scene, with a larger area cordoned off as forensic experts examined the area.

West Yorkshire Police said they were initially treating her death as unexplained, but in a later update described it as an “isolated, non-suspicious incident”.

The news led to an outpouring of shock and sadness.

“I’m sorry to hear about the loss of life in the Myra Shay area,” said Cllr Mohammed Shafiq (Lab, Bradford Moor).

“It’s a tragic incident,” said Cllr Zafar Iqbal (Lab, Bradford Moor).

“It’s sad news for the community.

“The community is trying to come to terms with this.

“The police have been in touch and they said they are working with the family.

“My thoughts are with the family.”

Many other people took to the Telegraph & Argus’s Facebook page to share their condolences. One woman spoke of how her partner had tried to help.

She said: “Please send my love to their family. My partner witnessed this.

“Him and his friends tried their best to save her. I’m so sorry for your loss x.”

Joanne Neeson wrote: “Heart breaking. May she rest in peace, thoughts are with the family.”
