A PLANNING inspector has backed Bradford Council's decision to block the development of a hair salon and flats in Baildon.

An application to demolish a building at 32 Baildon Road and build a salon with two, one bed flats above it in its place was refused by planning officers last year.

They said the three-storey development would overlook nearby residential flats, that there was insufficient car parking and insufficient information in relation to highway safety and land contamination.

Applicant David Hardy appealed this decision, saying some of the reasons for refusal were based on "feeble and unverifiable assumptions."

But a Government planning inspector has now dismissed that appeal.

Inspector A Caines pointed out that the site was next to a car repair workshop, and said: "Such uses do not usually sit comfortably in close proximity with residential uses for reasons including the noise that they can generate.

"The development would not provide acceptable living conditions for its occupiers, with particular regard to noise from an adjacent commercial workshop."

Dismissing the application they added: "I have found that the development would not provide acceptable living conditions for its occupiers with regard to noise, and would not be safe from the risk of land contamination."
