THE team behind the £23 million Darley Street Market project have released a video detailing the demolition and constructions work that will take place at the site.

Work finally began at the site - the former Marks & Spencers building on Darley Street, this week, with construction vehicles arriving at Piccadilly, behind the huge building.

Demolition will take place for much of this year, with the new market being built in 2022. It is due to open in 2023.

Vehicle access through Piccadilly has been closed this week due to the work starting.

The project will begin in earnest next month with the demolition of several vacant properties on Darley Street making way for the star, including the M&S building - which has been vacant since the store moved to the Broadway Shopping Centre in 2015.

The new market, which will include traditional market stalls as well as a food court and new "town square" will replace the existing two markets at the Oastler Centre and the Kirkgate Market in Kirkgate Centre.

Bradford's new Darley Street Market will have live music stage, late openings and seating for 500

Oastler Market will be demolished once the Darley Street Market is open, and the site used for housing as part of the City Village development.

The new animation produced by the developer, Kier Regional Building North & Scotland, shows the considerations in place to minimise potential disruption for both shoppers and adjacent businesses.

Dan Doherty, regional director at the developer Kier Regional Building North & Scotland, said: “We are thrilled to be starting demolition works at Darley Street Markets and we have taken all reasonable measures to avoid as much disruption as possible to the public and adjacent businesses.”

Architects have designed the market to help showcase the Victorian buildings on Piccadilly by making them more visible.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "The Darley Street Market will offer three floors of non-food, fresh food and hot food and drink.

"The market’s hot food and drink offer will provide seating for up to 500 customers and include a stage for day and evening entertainment.

"The hot food setup will follow an independent, street food style concept providing informal indoor and outdoor communal seating to allow customers to linger and experience a bustling markets atmosphere.

"The new scheme also includes a new public square which will host commercial, leisure and community events throughout the year."

Jason Longhurst, Interim Strategic Director for Place at Bradford Council, said: “Everyone at the Council is thrilled the work on this project is starting.

“In the coming weeks people will see some real changes to our city skyline and we hope our new animation shows people what they can expect.”
