A GOVERNMENT minister has praised the work done by two local partnerships to identify how £50m could be spent in the District.
Both Shipley and Keighley were named as possible beneficiaries of the Government's Towns Fund in 2019. The Fund would see up to £25m given to each town to develop regeneration projects.
A board made up of politicians, business leaders and community groups was formed in each town, and these groups submitted their bids to Government earlier this year.
In a letter to Council Leader Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Luke Hall – Minister for Regional Growth and Local Government, said confirmed that the government’s assessment process of the bids is continuing and decisions will be announced in due course.
In his letter to the Council Leader, Luke Hall MP said: “I am delighted to have received both Keighley and Shipley’s Town Investment Plans in February.
"It is great to see the distinctive approaches of the different towns, but also the areas of cooperation and complementarity.
“Town Deals are about a new way of direct working between government and places – putting decision-making in the hands of local people.
From health centres to cultural hubs - how should Keighley spend £25 million Towns Fund cash?
"You rightly highlight the importance of the two Town Deal Boards and I am very pleased to hear of the work they have both done to engage with local people and businesses.
“I am grateful for the leadership provided by Bradford council. Our assessment process continues, and we will be in touch with the outcome in due course.”
What regeneration projects should Shipley spend £25 million funding on?
Adam Clerkin, Chairperson of the Shipley Town Deal Board, said: “This is an encouraging response from the government and we look forward to receiving feedback on the Shipley Town Investment Plan submission in due course.”
Ian Hayfield, Chairperson of the Keighley Town Deal Board, said: “This is positive news for a town that is ready to move forward and develop a sustainable future for all .
“I must personally thank the efforts of those council officers who have helped myself and fellow board members to get to this stage . The journey continues.”
