Scores of people attended a party at Wrose Community Centre to mark the end of an era spanning 20 years.

The centre has been forced to close after running at a loss of £1,000 every week, leaving the committee with a legacy of insurmountable problems.

The centre's trustees have tabled proposals to create a new hub for Wrose residents, including building a new centre on the old site or sharing facilities.

Trustee Beryl Holt, said that, despite emotions running high, former members gave the old centre a great send-off at a Christmas party.

She said: "It was a lovely do. I was trying to reassure people that it was a new beginning. There were a few tears here and there but we are trying to be positive and move forward."

Mrs Holt said the committee was now getting the site valued with a view to selling it. They have already had an approach from one local developer wishing to demolish the existing building to make way for housing and a new community centre.

Councillor Vanda Greenwood (Lab, Windhill & Wrose), said: It is a shame it has to close because so many people have worked so hard to keep it open. We hope if we do reopen, people will come back and use the centre."
