AN inner city Bradford park could undergo a major upgrade to help boost football facilities in the area.
The proposals, which are being backed by the Football Foundation and the West Riding Football Association, would see improvements made to Attock Park in the Bradford Moor area.
The association says the park, in an area of Bradford with very little public play space, had been identified as a facility that could be improved to “enable more players of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to feel the many benefits of our national game.”
A planning application for improvements to the park was recently revealed by Bradford Council.
If approved a games area at the North of the park would be expanded and re-surfaced with new markings and fencing - increasing the space that can be used for ball games.
Another football games area at the South of the site would be re-surfaced with new LED flood lights installed.
The Council says the plans are a partnership with the Football Foundation, a charity that helps improve grassroots football facilities, and the West Riding FA, the governing body for football in the area.
The partnership says the goal of the application is to create a “quality and sustainable facility” in an area of Bradford where there is limited access to football pitches.
A Bradford Council spokesman said: “We have submitted a planning application as part of our ongoing work to refurbish Attock Park’s multi-use games areas (MUGAs).
“Over the coming months we will be working with join funders the Football Foundation and West Riding Football Association, the local community and sports groups on the scheme which aims to extend the sports provision at the park and to make it more inclusive.”
A spokesman from the West Riding Football Association added: “It is our long term ambition to transform the landscape of grassroots football facilities across England, including 3G Artificial Grass Pitches, improved grass pitches, changing rooms pavilions/clubhouses and small-sided facilities .
“Attock Park is one of the community facilities identified within Bradford where improvements would enable more players of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to feel the many benefits of our national game.
“The County Football Association and the Football Foundation are working with the Local Authority to follow an application process to show how the site will deliver key participation outcomes and be a quality and sustainable facility.”
A decision on the application is expected next month.
The application is the latest in a number of proposals to improve sports facilities in the Bradford District.
Work is currently underway to create a “sports village” at the former Wyke Manor School site that will include a pavilion, pitches and cycle facilities.
Another two sports hubs are being created at Myra Shay in Barkerend and at Marley in Keighley.
And earlier this year the English Cricket Board announced plans to create a £1.8 million urban cricket centre that would be based at the Parkside Sports Centre in West Bowling.
The aim of that project is to encourage more South Asian communities to get involved in the sport.
