Intrepid young people who took part in a range of outdoor pursuits have had their achievements recognised.

Organised by Bradford Council's Youth Service, a total of 531 young people from across the district took part in the packed Outdoor Education Programme of 21 events and activities during the spring and summer.

These included the Champion's Challenge which involved a five-day expedition by foot, kayak or mountain bike across the Lake District, Summer Fusion which brought young people together from different parts of the district, and the New Neighbours Project which encouraged young people to build new friendships with their peers in Glasgow, Scotland.

Trophies were presented to members of the Youth Inclusion Programme who won the It's A Knockout event in Lister Park; Clayton and Queensbury Youth Group scooped the prize for winning the Summer Fusion and the Champion's Challenge trophy was won by Bradford Academy/Youth Base.

The most prestigious award was given to St Joseph's Catholic College pupil Emily Clark, 16, as Outdoor Education Achiever of the Year for her outstanding efforts in a variety of programmes.

Outdoor education youth worker Mike Burtoft said: "This was a fantastic celebration night to recognise the hard work and determination of young people from across the district.

"The activities were very demanding and the aim was to bring young people together from different areas of the district as well as giving them the chance to learn new skills and discover new talents.

"Emily is a wonderful example and her award is in recognition of how she supported, mentored and enthused others to take part in outdoor activities - she's an inspiration to us all."

Councillor Colin Gill, the Council's executive member for children's services, said: "The Council's Youth Service organises a wide range of interesting and exciting activities for young people in Bradford and it's wonderful to see their involvement recognised."
