A BRADFORD teenager who died at a popular beauty spot in Bingley last month has been named locally as 14-year-old Muhammad Abu Farhan.
Abu, of Barkerend Road, is thought to have drowned at Goit Stock Waterfall near Cullingworth on March 30.
His funeral took place on April 1, and now a fundraiser has been set up in his memory to support orphaned children in Bangladesh.
Bingley Rural Councillor Paul Sullivan, whose ward incorporates Goit Stock, said Abu’s death was a “tragic loss” and served as “a timely reminder of the dangers of open water” in a Facebook post in which he named the boy.
A beauty spot along a popular walking route, Goit Stock sees plenty of visitors, particularly in the past 12 months, drawn by its picturesque setting and opportunity to go for a paddle or to cool off – particularly on warm summer days.
However, with a rapidly flowing water and a deep riverbed there are risks to going too far into the waterfall, especially for weak swimmers.
On the GoFundMe page set up for Abu, organiser Halima Begum described him as “a beautiful, well-mannered 14-year-old boy” with “the most angelic smile”.
Money raised by the fund, which has already passed the £1,100 mark in just 24 hours, will go towards supporting orphaned children in Bangladesh.
