A man has died after a car smash on his way to fly out to Egypt for a dream Christmas holiday with his girlfriend.

Keith Mayne, 65, suffered massive blood loss when the car his partner was driving was involved in a collision with a van near Manchester Airport.

Speaking from his home in School Street, Cottingley, Mr Mayne's son Paul, 39, said his father had been looking forward to travelling to Egypt where he had spent holidays in the past.

Paul, whose sister Carol lives in Keighley, said: "He will be dearly missed by all of us."

Mr Mayne, who had moved to Cheadle Hulme, near Manchester, also leaves two grandchildren, Emma, one, and Robert, five.

Paul said: "Emma absolutely loved him, she did her first walk and Robert his first crawl at his house. We have tried to explain what's happened to Robert but he doesn't really understand."

Mr Mayne was born in Leeds as one of four children and ran his own company, Mayne Industrial Controls, until he retired.

He bought Paul an equestrian riding school in Oxenhope and spent many years working for Aramco oil company in Saudi Arabia.

On his return to the UK his family settled in West Yorkshire. He separated from his wife, Beryl, later divorced and had lived with his partner Hazel in Cheshire for 15 years.

Paul said his father had many friends and was at his element when he had a job to do.

"He was very meticulous, he had little pots of paint and would walk round the house touching up the paintwork," he said. "His house was spotless, he wouldn't put off tomorrow what he could do today, cleaning the carpet was like a ritual to him.

"He was a workaholic, if he started something he had to finish it and would work through the night.

"If you had something that you didn't want, he would always try to make something out of it and when I was thinking about doing some DIY I would always ring him first, he would always ponder it and get back to me later."

Only last week Mr Mayne visited Paul and his wife, Rachel, and helped assemble some walling at his son's workplace.

"Hazel said he was bouncing around afterwards, their house was virtually finished and he needed a new project and he was going to help us with a conservatory next."

Mr Mayne died from his injuries at Wythenshawe Hospital, in Manchester, after suffering internal bleeding about 12 hours after the crash which occurred on Wednesday.

He was sitting in the back of a Fiat Punto that was turning right from Styal Road on to Ringway at about 7.20am when it was involved in a collision with a white Vauxhall Vivaro van.

Hazel suffered slight injuries while a male driver of the van escaped uninjured. A date is yet to be set for the funeral.
