A SUPERMARKET in the Bradford district has handed out grants totalling £3,000 to good causes.
Tesco’s branch in Cleckheaton has handed out grants of £1,000 each to three groups as part of the chain’s national scheme.
The Bags of Help grants help fund thousands of local community projects across the UK, helping to improve community buildings and outdoor spaces, buy new equipment, train coaches and volunteers and host community events.
The grants are managed by the community charity Groundwork UK in conjunction with Tesco.
Tesco’s Cleckheaton branch handed over three cheques from the January to March applications.
The first £1,000 cheque went to 1st Spen Valley Scouts based in Birkenshaw. The money will be used to help fund a replacement floor at their headquarters which is used by more than 100 young people and community groups.
The second £1,000 cheque was awarded to St Peters Church, Hartshead with Hightown. The money will help to update the kitchen in the church which is used by local community groups throughout the year.
The third prize went to Fusion Food Bank of Dewsbury. The food bank has been running for five years and assists people in desperate need all over Kirklees. They collect twice a week from the store through the Community Food Connection Scheme, taking surplus food and donations of long life products donated by the general public. The money will be used to help support with essential items.
Melanie Smiles, the Cleckheaton Tesco branch’s community Champion, said it was a pleasure to hand over the cheques to three deserving organisations.
