Fire chiefs in Bradford are urging householders to celebrate safely this Christmas by getting into a routine for what they do before going to bed.
Keith Robinson, district manager for West Yorkshire Fire Service, said half the number of domestic fire deaths take place between 10pm and 8am.
He said: "That is why it is important to check your home before going to bed."
Mr Robinson said electrical faults were responsible for 14 per cent of all fires in the home.
He offered the following tips to follow before going to bed:
- Switch off appliances such as Christmas lights, the grill, hobs and oven, heaters, electric blankets, washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher
- Don't smoke in bed
- Don't leave candles burning
- Have an escape plan in case of emergency.
