Homes across Yorkshire could experience power cuts today as some planned outages are set to take place.

Northern Powergrid are also dealing with some unplanned power shortages but they are hoping to restore power in these postcodes as soon as possible.

Here’s everything you need to know about power cuts in West Yorkshire- including what to do if you find yourself in one:

Why do power cuts take place?

There are a number of reasons why you may have no power such as an unexpected (unplanned) fault on the network or scheduled maintenance.

Northern Powergrid wrote this to their website: “We're committed to providing you with a safe and reliable electricity supply and  we invest approximately £300 million a year in improving our network and sometimes we need to switch off your electricity supply to do this safely. More than 90% of work is undertaken with the electricity switched on.

For some types of work such as repairing a fault, replacement and maintenance work, connecting a new supply and clearing trees/vegetation from overhead lines, we need to switch off the electricity to make sure we can carry out the works safely.”

Here are some of the reasons why a power cut might be planned:

  • Essential Maintenance
  • Repair a fault
  • Connecting a new customer
  • Tree trimming
  • Carry out reinforcement
  • Refurbishment and replacement at substations
  • Replacement of underground cables
  • Movement of equipment to allow another organisation to work
  • Replacement and refurbishment on power lines

What should I do if I have no power?

Northern Powergrid has created a checklist of things to consider if you are in, or have been informed of a power cut set to take place.

The list is as follows:

  • Have a battery-powered or wind-up radio tuned into a local radio station
  • Keep a torch handy - much safer than candles
  • Make sure you have a charged mobile to hand with all important numbers stored
  • If you have a stair lift, avoid using it up to 30 minutes prior to a planned power cut
  • Only use alternative forms of heat or lighting if they're safe
  • Regularly back-up work and important files on your computer before a power cut
  • Make a hot water bottle and fill a vacuum flask with something warm
  • Make sure you wrap up warm with extra clothes and/or blankets
  • Ensure cupboards are stocked with food and drink
  • Kitchen appliances will be ok during a power cut
  • Home and fire alarms may be affected during a power cut
  • Fish and livestock may be vulnerable during a power cut
