A BRADFORD-based charity has helped to deliver emergency aid after 45,000 people were left displaced when a fire broke out at a refugee camp in Bangladesh.
Human Relief Foundation (HRF) provided on-the-ground support after the blaze at Cox's Bazar camp, which is home to refugees from the Rohingya ethnic group, last Monday.
At least 15 people died in the fire, which destroyed hundreds of homes.
The HRF Bangladesh Team were already in the area when the blaze started, as the charity is about to begin a major shelter-building project at the camp.
Using their relief work expertise, the team have been undertaking critical needs assessments, and distributing emergency aid.
“The speed at which everything happened, and the scale of the damage is quite overwhelming. However, our 30 years of experience dealing with humanitarian crises means that we’ve a team in place who have been able to get on the ground, and begin to make a difference immediately”, said Obaidur Rahman, HRF’s Bangladesh Country Director.
“This is another devastating loss for Rohingya who fled Myanmar with nothing, and have now lost everything for a second time. With the monsoon season only a few months away, it’s important we quickly get them under shelter, and supplied with the necessities for life", he added.
