PROPOSALS to turn an empty site on the edge of the city centre into a car sales business have been approved after the plans were re-drawn to include fewer shipping containers.

The plot of land off Snowdon Street, just off Manningham Lane, was the subject of a planning application by Chaudhry Majad last Summer.

It would have seen part of the site set out as a car sales pitch and car wash, with five converted shipping containers installed on the site, providing shops, offices and a take away.

However, planning offices raised concerns about the scale of the development.

Revised plans, including just two cafe/take away units and a small security office, were submitted, and this application has now been approved by Bradford Council.

10-storey development of 230 flats and wedding venue planned for Trafalgar Street

Located behind the Connaught Rooms, the site has a long planning history. Most recently it was earmarked as the site of a ten-storey high rise apartment scheme of hundreds of flats and function venue.

Planning officers said: "This is a site that has been vacant for a substantial period of time and has been subject of planning applications for comprehensive redevelopment in the past. Unfortunately, none of these developments have been implemented.

"The proposed development as revised is considered to represent an acceptable form of development on this site which would not cause any significant harm to visual amenity, the setting of nearby heritage assets, residential amenity or highway safety."

One condition of the approval is that businesses on the site can only operate between 7am and 11pm.
