English-speaking children are a minority in more than 30 per cent of Bradford schools - the highest number in Yorkshire, new figures reveal.

However, data released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families shows that the district is ranked in 21st place of English local education authorities.

Newham, in London, tops the table with 87.6 per cent.

To help integrate children with low or no English, Bradford Council recently announced 28 struggling primary schools across the district would receive a £1.5 million boost to help raise standards - and support youngsters from migrant families.

Areas causing greatest concern are east and west Bradford where primary schools continue to miss or have the potential to miss targets. It is proposed that 28 schools are the focus for the additional funding.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We have allocated an extra £1.5 million to boost school improvement in parts of the district which will help boost standards of English for all pupils - not just children from migrant families."

Leicester, with English-language speaking children a minority in 31 per cent of schools, and Blackburn and Darwen, with 30.3 per cent, both rank above Bradford.
