A van driver arrested in connection with the death of a seven-year-old boy in Girlington yesterday remains in custody.

The 31-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and police are appealing for more witnesses to come forward.

The incident happened in Girlington Road, Girlington, Bradford, at 4pm at the junction with Duckworth Lane.

A police spokesman said the white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van had been travelling south towards Thornton Road when the collision occurred with the boy who had been walking towards Duckworth Lane.

The boy, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking yesterday, Arshad Hussein, Conservative Councillor for the Toller Ward, which covers the Girlington area, said: "This is a huge tragedy not just for the young boy's family but for the whole community.

"It is always shocking to lose a child of that age whatever the circumstances. My heart really goes out to the family of this young boy."

And Labour Councillor Amir Hussein said: "I have just heard of this terrible tragedy and I would like to express my sympathy to the family of this little boy who was so tragically killed.

"Although we do not know the full circumstances of the accident we have been concerned that traffic calming measures be installed in this area for some time to try and prevent such accidents from happening."

Anyone who saw the incident or who saw the van immediately beforehand should contact PC2589 Darren Wood at Bradford North Road Traffic Department on (01274) 376247.
