MEAT lovers in Bradford have been urged to go vegan through a new campaign after the city was voted the least vegan friendly place in the UK.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has placed a billboard poster on Rooley Lane encouraging meat-loving residents to have a change of heart and leave animals off their plates.
The large advert features a picture of a pig with the tagline 'I Want You To Change - Go Vegan'.
Kate Werner, PETA senior campaigns manager, said: "PETA wants the UK’s vegan-unfriendliest city to turn over a new leaf in 2021 and start opting for delicious vegan meals that no animal had to suffer and die for.
We want to spark a dialogue with this billboard. It features a pig which is one of the most consumed and exploited animals
"When it comes to feeling pain, loving their families, and valuing their own lives, a pig is no different from a human being."
The billboard poster, the only one of its kind on display in the country, went up today and will be up until February 8.
The organisation says each person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year and helps prevent future pandemics, as SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and Covid-19 all originated from confining and killing animals for food.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that 'animals are not ours to eat' and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview – offers a free vegan starter kit on its website, along with recipes for vegan bacon and other pig-friendly fare.
The group also highlights the latest vegan products to hit the market, such as ready-to-heat vegan bacon and vegan 'baconaise'.
Saveonenergy.com/uk ranked Bradford as the least vegan friendly city in the UK in a survey earlier this month to mark Veganuary.
The study considered several criteria and created an index to find out the answer.
For each city, they looked at its number of vegan-friendly restaurants; Organic health food shops; Vegan supplement stores and its total 'vegan' monthly search volumes (per 1,000 population).
Coming in last place is Bradford with a total score of 19. The number of vegan restaurants in Bradford totals 129, sixth from the bottom of the list.
When it comes to organic and health food shops, Bradford places at the bottom of the list with only 10.
Bradford also had the penultimate result when looking at search volumes, with a total number of just 310 a month.
