MARK Trueman was scratching his head over how Gareth Evans had not won it for City at leaders Cambridge today.
Evans thought he had scored his first goal since returning to the club in the second half at the Abbey Stadium.
But his shot hit the inside of one post, rolled along the line to hit the other and then came back before Cambridge could clear.
Trueman said: “We all thought it was in as soon as it left Evo’s foot. But the momentum of the ball changed and somehow it didn’t go in.
“Everyone stopped for a moment and then they calmly cleared the ball. It’s not something that you see happen very often in football and obviously a disappointing one.
“Credit where it’s due, Cambridge are top of the league for a reason. But it’s about chances and I thought we created some good ones.”
It was the fourth clean sheet in the six games since Trueman and Conor Sellars were appointed.
Sam Hornby twice superbly denied Paul Mullin, League Two’s top scorer, but City also threatened and Danny Rowe delivered a lively debut up front.
Trueman added: “Sam made two good saves but we created some good chances first half and at the back end of the second became the stronger team and could have nicked it.
“Rowey when he had a shot in the first half showed that we needed to test the keeper a bit more. The goal-mouth was obviously a bit cut up after the snow before the game.
“We needed to shoot more around the box but unfortunately it didn’t fall our way.
“Winning breeds confidence but so does clean sheets. It would have been great if we’d nicked the three points but that’s us being greedy.
“We want to get away from that relegation battle so we’ve got to keep putting in these performances.”
