Pupils and teachers at two schools are celebrating after being announced as category winners in the Telegraph & Argus Cash for Schools competition.

St Winefride's Catholic Primary School, in Wibsey, scooped £2,000 by claiming the primary school prize, while Hanson school won £3,000 in the secondary school category.

T&A deputy editor Brian Nuttney presented the winners' cheques to the schools yesterday.

A total of 96 other schools registered to take part during the eight-week Cash for Schools promotion, which asked readers to cut out and collect T&A mastheads and hand them into their local schools, with the schools that collected the most mastheads in those categories winning the prize.

Altogether, the T&A received a stunning 207,267 mastheads from the participating schools.

Pupils at St Winefride's collected no less than 10,900 mastheads and are now looking forward to using their prize money on improved playground facilities.

Maureen Cairns, head at St Winefride's, said: "I was absolutely shocked and delighted that we had won. We are really really pleased.

"As for what we might spend our prize money on, there's a whole list of things we would love to do with the school.

"But the children have worked hard to collect all these mastheads and they should have the decision on how it's spent.

"They have highlighted the playground as an area that could be improved and a lot of work has been done already on what they would like the playground to look like. We can now bring these plans forward with the prize money.

"This is a wonderful end to the term. We are very grateful to the T&A for running this competition."

Meanwhile, students at Hanson, who collected 3,497 mastheads, are hoping to set up an outdoor eating area with the money.

Fran Waddington, student support leader for year eight, said: "The Cash for Schools has been fantastic and has really motivated the children.

"Some of the ideas for how to spend the money include an outdoor eating area because we are really lacking in benches."

She said an enterprise business based around sustainability had also been mooted.

Nathan Taylor, year eight student at Hanson, said: "I collected mastheads from my paper-round and people were very keen to help.

"They knew it would raise money for the school and that there is a lack of facilities."

Liam Lloyd, a year 11 student, said: "I would like the money spent on an enterprise business of Hanson goods or stationery, or on a sheltered area where we can sit and eat outside."

Five runners-up each received £1,000 to spend at IKEA. They are: St John's CE Primary, in Dawson Lane, Bradford; Wibsey Primary, in North Road, Wibsey; St Columba's Catholic Primary, in Tong Street, Bradford; Wyke Manor and Community College; and Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College.

Meanwhile, all schools that submitted their mastheads will receive a consolation prize of an IKEA hamper, football and mini rugby ball and mini football. The two main sponsors were IKEA and Yorkshire Building Society, along with Dabler International which offered all the balls for the consolation prizes.
