A 20-year-old man accused of lying to a jury while on trial for dangerous driving may face a new charge, a judge warned today.

Judge Roger Scott told Faisel Yaqoob, of Toller Lane, Bradford, he may be charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Yaqoob was convicted by a jury after a trial at Bradford Crown Court.

"You ran a completely dishonest defence -whether you and your witnesses are charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice is not for me to say," Judge Scott told Yaqoob at a sentencing hearing.

The judge said Yaqoob was showing off to his passenger when he drove through a red light and hit a taxi.

The taxi driver and a fare-paying passenger had to be cut free from the vehicle.

Firefighters had to remove the roof of the badly damaged taxi after the crash at the junction of Thornton Road and Girlington Road, Bradford, on October 22 last year.

Judge Scott told Yaqoob if he had not been of good character he might have been locked up.

He was sentenced to 12 months' supervision and 100 hours' unpaid work.

Yaqoob was banned from driving for 18 months and he must take an extended driving test to regain his licence.

The judge warned Yaqoob that if he breaches the order he will be sent to custody for 56 days.
