The Walkabout in Bradford city centre has picked up the award for best nightclub in West Yorkshire as part of the police's Best Bar None initiative.

It was selected from more than a hundred Best Bar None accredited premises across the county.

Inspector Steve Baker, Bradford city centre police inspector, said: "The successful way the nightclubs and other licensed premises within Bradford city centre function and work is highlighted by the results of the awards.

"The contribution they make to the city centre has helped in reducing the number of violent crimes from 1,700 to 700 in the last two years. This means Bradford city centre is now a much safer and better place to visit, work and live."

PC Su Dawson, licensing officer for Bradford South Division, said: "It has been a pleasure working with the licensed trade in assisting them to be recognised for the good work they do.

"They have contributed greatly to the vibrant night time economy in Bradford city centre and we look forward to continuing the excellent work."

West Yorkshire Police runs the awards in partnership with the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, West Yorkshire Trading Standards, the British Beer and Pub Association and local authorities.

Once venues have applied to become accredited, specialist assessors carry out inspections.

The results for Bradford South Division were: best bar, The Courtyard Bar, Bradford University; runner-up, Bambooza. Best club, Walkabout; runner-up, Livingstones. Best pub, Sir Titus Salt; runner-up, Yates's Wine Bar.
