A fire chief today warned people to be extra careful with fairy lights, candles and decorations, to avoid fires over the festive season.
West Yorkshire Fire Service Assistant Chief Fire Officer Craig McIntosh urged householders to guard against seasonal perils that posed special risks to elderly people and children.
He said: "Christmas is a time for having fun with family and friends but it is also a time when extra hazards are brought into the home such as fairy lights, candles and decorations.
"Last year, West Yorkshire firefighters dealt with 65 fires caused by candles, 35 caused by heaters and eight caused by electric blankets.
"Many of us will be thinking about putting up our Christmas decorations so I'm urging people to follow a few simple tips to keep everyone safe."
He said to check tree lights are safe, switch off electrical appliances when not in use, never leave cooking unattended, check smoke alarm batteries are working and never place candles near a Christmas tree or furnishings.
