Rail passenger use at peak periods is expected to grow by 20 per cent in the five years between 2009 and 2014, the Network Rails Strategic Business Plan estimates.

Passenger pressure group the Aire Valley Rail Users Group has welcomed the recommendation for an extra bay platform at Keighley by 2012 to help accommodate the increase.

A spokesman said: "This has considerable merit but may prove to be expensive, which would need an upgrade of signalling between Shipley and Keighley."

Network Rail is expected to produce its draft Yorkshire and Humberside Route Utilisation Strategy, including detailed proposals for the Airedale line, early next year.
