A new DIY store in Bingley has started a campaign to raise thousands of pounds to pay for the care of people with cancer.

Bosses at Homebase in Keighley Road, Crossflatts, hope to raise £2,000 this year for their chosen charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The store and garden centre - part of a £10million development with kitchen giant Magnet - officially opened at the weekend, creating 58 jobs.

The company has already raised £600,000 for Marie Curie from collections in its stores nationwide.

Sharon Hibbin, manager of the Crossflatts store, said: "We set ourselves our own store target of £2,000 so we hope that with support from our new customers we'll make it possible for more cancer patients to be given the choice of being cared for at home, with the people who matter to them the most."

Developer Gregory Projects, part of the Leeds-based Gregory Group, carried out the retail development for Homebase and Magnet on the site of Magnet's headquarters.

Engineers at Elland-based Thistle Construction have been working on the project.

Magnet has had a headquarters at the old Ashfield Mills for about 30 years, with a warehouse, showroom and offices. The new Magnet showroom and warehouse opened in July.
