BRADFORDIANS are being encouraged to fly the flag for Yorkshire Day this year as the City Hall bells ring out the county's famous anthem 'On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at'.
From World Record breaking welly wanging to markets, there are plenty of ways to celebrate life in God's own country.
Taking place on Saturday, August 1, people are being invited to enjoy all the things the district has to offer within the limits of social distancing - a pandemic cannot stop pride.
The Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Doreen Lee will be broadcasting a personal video message to residents and toasting the day with a cup of tea on Bradford Council's Facebook and Twitter pages.
In the run up to the big day, Visit Bradford will be launching a Yorkshire Day blog, which will be regularly updated with things to do across the district.
Weavers Guest House in Haworth is also lending a hand to celebrations by taking over the Visit Bradford Instagram account for a week (from August 1-9) to give people a closer look at the picturesque cobbles, moors and landscape in and around Haworth and Bronte County.
Meanwhile local artists, crafters and producers will be selling at the online Bradford Street Market.
This Thursday sees the fourth themed week at the Bradford Street Market with a Yorkshire Day special taking place on 30 July, 2020.
Bradford Street Market founder, Catherine Simes, said: “Yorkshire Day at the Bradford Street Market will be something special, a true celebration of our incredible Yorkshire produce, creative crafters and fabulous Bradfordian artists. We have everything from Yorkshire craft beers, the best regional food, photographs, paintings, cards and prints of some of Yorkshire's most beautiful landscapes and locally made crafts that make unique gifts for your favourite Yorkshire folk."
A group of residents in Eldwick are taking on a world record welly wanging attempt this Saturday for Yorkshire Cancer Research. The attempt is part of Eldwick Welly Fest, an annual fundraising event.
As part of the festival, residents will be helping Yorkshire Cancer Research set a new world record for ‘the most videos of people throwing wellington boots uploaded in one hour on Facebook’. The event, which will be ‘world’s biggest virtual welly wang’, will be hosted on Facebook between 2 and 3pm on Yorkshire Day (August 1st) and is open to everyone in the Yorkshire region.
To take part people are asked to film themselves wanging a welly and upload the footage to the charity’s dedicated Facebook vent page within the one-hour timeframe.
Residents will be on Eldwick Rec on Sat 1 Aug from 12.30pm, with the welly wanging world record attempt taking place from 2pm. Social distancing guidelines will be in place.
Adele Hepworth, an Eldwick resident who has organised the event, said: “The Eldwick Team is a small group of local mums who are passionate about bringing the community together. Cancer is something that touches everyone’s lives in some way. We are conscious that during the pandemic, some people with cancer may not have been able to access medical care when needed and that others have delayed seeking treatment during this time."
In Bradford city centre, City Hall, Margaret McMillan Tower and the arches at Forster Square Station will be lit up in blue, white and yellow.
The Sparkling Bradford summer website has also been launched which highlights the best of the district’s hospitality, visitor attractions and shopping, as the district gradually reopens with COVID-19 precautions in place.
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, executive member for Healthy People and Places, said: “Yorkshire Day is a great opportunity to shout about what’s great about our district and the whole of the region.
“With more places cautiously opening now and over the coming weeks, there is so much to see and do, whether you want to explore the breath-taking scenery on our doorsteps, take in some history and culture or visit our shops. But while we are delighted things are moving again, we all need to remember face coverings need to be worn, where possible, in shops and that we maintain social distancing – that way we can all enjoy our district safely.”
