A LAMBORGHINI which crashed on a motorway yesterday was only 20 minutes old.

Traffic was held and queuing for up to three miles after a crash involving the supercar and a van on the M1 earlier this afternoon.

West Yorkshire Police was called to reports of a collision involving two vehicles on the southbound carriageway of the motorway at around 1.12pm on Wednesday, June 24.

It happened near junction 40 (A638 Wakefield Road, Ossett/Wakefield).

PC Richard Whiteley, of West Yorkshire Police, said the Lamborghini stopped in lane three due to a mechanical failure.

It was then hit from behind by an "innocent motorist" in a van.

A picture taken by the officer showed extensive damage to the back of the supercar.

Its back-right wheel was missing and the body of the car was badly crumpled.

PC Whiteley said: "It’s only a car. But on this occasion, a 20-minute-old, brand-new Lamborghini that stopped due to mechanical failure in lane three then hit from behind by an innocent motorist."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the van driver suffered head injuries, but they were not believed to be serious.

Three lanes of the carriageway had to be closed while recovery was underway.

The T&A's traffic page initially said all four lanes were blocked, lanes two, three and four have had to be shut.

At its peak, congestion was stretching beyond junction 41 (Carrgate) with travel time at 30 minutes.

Traffic began to be held from 2.25pm, but was released five minutes later.

Vehicles had been using the exit slip-road at junction 40 to get round the crash scene until around 1.30pm.

All three closed lanes were reopened at around 2.51pm, but traffic was still queuing.
