WORKS to turn a derelict pub on Leeds Road into a jewellers have been approved by Bradford Council.

Plans to turn the Waggon and Horses on Leeds Road into a shop were first approved in 2017 - but work on the long empty pub has yet to begin.

In February another application - to build an extension at the back of the building, was submitted by Shabir Hussain.

The application said the works would allow the building to become a “quality jewellery outlet” and a landmark building on the busy road.

The extension would double the amount of space on the ground floor, and the application adds: "The aim is to use quality materials and products in the renovation of the building, with a significant consideration to be given to the security and an end product which compliments the district and competes with other ‘top end’ jewellers throughout the country.

"We believe the investment which our client is prepared to put in to this site, should be considered as a positive contribution to the bustling Leeds Road area."

That application has now been approved, with planning officers saying of the pub: “The appearance is generally tired and the building is falling into disrepair with the lack of maintenance due to being unoccupied.

"The grounds are also suffering from a lack of upkeep and appear to be attracting a level of fly tipping. The proposal facilitates bring the property back into use."
