A TEMPORARY mortuary created in a former leisure centre has so far not been needed.
In April it was announced that the former Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Odsal could be used as a temporary mortuary should the district’s current mortuaries not be able to cope with a high death toll during the Covid -19 crisis.
Preparation works did take place at the centre, but Bradford Council has revealed that, as of this week, the facility has not been used.
Numerous temporary morgues were set up across the country as the virus spread.
Council decides to keep 'strategic' Richard Dunn Centre site
The Richard Dunn Sports Centre was vacated late last year after Bradford Council opened its new Sedbergh Leisure Centre.
The building was due to be demolished this Summer, but the Covid crisis changed these plans.
A Council spokesperson said: “At the beginning of the pandemic Bradford Council emergency planning team made arrangements should an additional temporary mortuary be required to cover any eventualities.
“Thankfully the facility has not needed to be used.”
