BRADFORD buildings will be lit up purple tonight to remember George Floyd.
Bradford Council said it is a way to "show our unity in the worldwide fight against racism #BlackLivesMatter".
Bradford Council’s City Hall, Margaret McMillan Tower, St George's Hall and the arches at Forster Square will be lit up purple in memory of the African-American, whose death last week in Minneapolis after being arrested by police prompted worldwide protests against racism and police brutality.
The buildings were also lit up on Tuesday amid the major Blackout Tuesday movement, where people posted black squares and stopped social media activity in support of Black Lives Matter.
Bradford joins a number of local authorities across the UK in lighting up buildings as a mark of solidarity with Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities around the world.
Thousands of people across the country are expected to attend demonstrations today in solidarity with protests in the US that are demanding justice for Mr Floyd and others.
Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, said: “Bradford is a City of Sanctuary, we are defined by how we stand alongside people who are persecuted. We are proud to show solidarity with those protesting against these injustices, shockingly highlighted by the atrocious killing of George Floyd.
"No-one who has seen the pictures of what is happening can fail to be outraged.”
The lights will come on at sunset, approximately 9pm, and shine until midnight.
