A NUMBER of Bradford businesses are taking part in “unsafe behaviour” despite extensive government warnings, and will soon be visited by Trading Standards, Council officers and, if needed, police.

They could be handed an “unlimited fine” if they do not comply.

Bradford Council today said although most local businesses are sticking to Government advice, a “small number” were ignoring this advice by staying open when they should be shut, or taking part in unsafe work practices.

These could soon be visited by the same teams that are responsible for closing down unsafe businesses, such as unhygienic restaurants and those that sell alcohol to children.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “This is a terrible situation affecting the UK and we are facing unprecedented disruption to people’s lives and the local economy. 

“Our primary focus must be to protect the public and staff, and this means doing everything we can to reduce the spread of the virus.

“We ask that all businesses follow the latest Government guidance on business closures to ensure the health and wellbeing of everyone in the district. 

“We thank the vast majority of companies and workers who are following the Government advice and being responsible.

 “A small minority of businesses are taking part in unsafe behaviours and not following the guidance.

 “Environmental Health Officers and Trading Standards’ staff, with police support if appropriate, will take firm action against businesses who are breaking the rules.

 “They are liable to be issued with a prohibition notice and may be subject to an unlimited fine if they continue to put others at risk by their behaviour.

The Government and the Health and Safety Executive are giving advice on which businesses should close, which businesses can remain open and how those who remain open can ensure that the rules on social distancing are applied.
