A POLICE officer was accused of "ruining Christmas" after taking a danger driver off our roads.

PC 513 Claire Gray, a roads policing officer for West Yorkshire Police, was called to reports of a car speeding up and down a Bradford street yesterday evening.

The officer faced even more abuse as she was branded a "low life amongst other choice words".

The driver was found to be intoxicated with alcohol.

Recent figures suggest more than 215 drivers have been arrested for drink or drug driving since the start of the month.

In a bid to tackle the crime, the force has launched its #WYPTheCost campaign - an initiative backed by the mother of a man who was killed by the actions of a drink and drug driver.

Carole Whittingham’s son Steven died on January 30, 1992, after a stolen vehicle being driven in excess of 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone collided with his car.

The driver had been drinking and taking drugs before getting behind the wheel.

Since Steven’s death, Carole has set up the charity SCARD (Support and Care After Road Death and Injury).

SCARD offers year-round support to the families and friends of those lost in road related accidents.

In a video, Carole said: "Steven's death impacts even today in so many ways, so many ways. We celebrate his birthday by going to the cemetery and putting flowers on his grave.

"When it's Christmas, or somebody's getting married or somebody's being christened, Steven's not there.

"We avoid celebrations when we can. As far as Christmas is concerned, I do not bother at all. Christmas is another day as far as I'm concerned because at that table there's somebody that should be there that is missing.

"My heart's crying all the time."
