A TEENAGER is fighting for his life in hospital following a horror crash.

Kyle Wear received serious head and internal injuries when he was struck in Hard Ings Road, Keighley.

The 18-year-old – from the Parkwood area of Keighley – was walking with friends when a Vauxhall Zafira collided with temporary fencing, leaving Kyle badly hurt.

He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, where he is now on a life-support machine with his family at his bedside.

Kyle’s uncle, Joe Usher, has set-up an online fundraising page to help his nephew’s single mum – Kendra, a teaching assistant – and her four other children meet travel and subsistence expenses during the period ahead.

Mr Usher, 35, who lives in Manchester, got a phone call on Sunday evening alerting him to what had happened and rushed straight over to the hospital.

“It’s just horrendous,” said the care co-ordinator.

“Kyle is connected to a machine, with lots of tubes coming out of him. It’s awful to see.

“He has brain injuries and at the moment there are no signs of activity or movement, but consultants are working round the clock to save his life and we’re remaining positive.

“Kyle is strong and a fighter, and we’re all there for him.”

Mr Usher said Kyle – who is Keighley born and bred, and studies at the town’s college – is hugely popular and is receiving a lot of support.

He added: “He’s an intelligent, caring, happy-go-lucky lad with a lot of friends.

“What’s happened has left us all devastated.

“Kyle is Kendra’s baby boy and it’s going to be a hugely difficult time for her and the family – trying to be in a hundred places at once and keeping her children together while fighting hard with Kyle.

“I’m hoping that through the online fundraising page we may just be able to at least take some of the worries away and help Kendra and her beautiful children through this period and enable them to focus on being there for Kyle. Any help people could give would be amazing.”

Police have issued an appeal for information and witnesses following Sunday’s accident.

Officers were called to the incident, which happened near the ambulance station, at around 5.40pm.

A red Vauxhall Zafira was travelling towards Bradford when it was in collision with the temporary fencing, which has been installed due to road-widening work being carried out.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended and took Kyle to LGI.

Police ask witnesses and anyone with information, particularly dash cam footage, to come forward.
