A BRADFORD-born designer is making waves in the fashion world and has been nominated for a raft of prestigious awards.

Daniel Lee attended Dixons City Academy and then honed his talent at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

Last year, he was named Creative Director at Italian luxury goods and high fashion brand Bottega Veneta. He’s also worked at Maison Margiela, Balenciaga and Donna Karan.

Prior to joining Bottega Veneta, Lee was Director of Ready-to-Wear Design at Céline.

Earlier this year, Stylist magazine said Lee was “brewing up a fashion storm amongst industry insiders” creating “cool clothes that women want to wear”.

Glamour magazine said he is “ubiquitous” on every fashion fan’s Instagram feed -he's behind the Pouch bag loved by everyone from former Victoria’s Secret Angel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to singer Rihanna.

Lee is now up for a number of accolades at The Fashion Awards 2019.

Led by the British Fashion Council, the awards “recognise creativity and innovation in fashion, celebrating exceptional individuals whose imagination and creativity has broken new ground in fashion globally over the past 12 months as well as brands and businesses that have transformed the possibilities of fashion today”.

Lee is up for Accessories Designer of the Year, British Designer of the Year - Womenswear and Designer of the Year.

Dixons City Academy has spoken with delight at the former pupil’s huge achievements.

Shirley Watson, Executive Principal of Dixons Academies Trust, who was Head of Sixth Form at Dixons City Academy during his time there, said: “It is inspiring to hear about Daniels’ many achievements in the fashion industry.

“As a student, he showed tremendous creative flair, tenacity and a drive to be the best he could be.

“Daniel’s appointment as Creative Director at a major fashion brand and award nominations come as no surprise to us and we are extremely proud to have played a small part in his development.

“How well prepared our young people are for the world of work is an important measure of our 29 years of success as an organisation, so it is always a pleasure to hear about the achievements of our alumni, such as Daniel.

"We look forward to hearing more about his future successes.”

Fashion bible Vogue said “the hype is real” around Lee.

In an interview last month, the magazine reported Lee was raised here in Bradford, where his father worked a mechanic and his mother was a stay-at-home mum.

The eldest of three, Lee said he was a “geek” and considered a career in law, but said he loved “making things” the most.

Vogue described his Bottega Veneta autumn-pre collection in December last year “the most eagerly awaited of recent seasons”, dubbing his designs as “clothes that simply make you look like a better, more expensive-looking version of you”.

His mission for the heritage brand “is to maintain the codes of the house—craftsmanship, quality and sophistication—while imbuing them with a new perspective and modernity”.

The Fashion Awards 2019 will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on December 2.
