A SERIES of 20mph zones in Bradford city centre went live today.
Most of the streets in the centre, apart from larger roads such as Hall Ings, Manchester Road and Leeds Road, will have the reduced limits under the new legislation - first approved by Bradford Council earlier this year.
The Council says the reduced limits will make the city centre more attractive to pedestrians and cyclists, and aid regeneration.
The roll out, which includes new signage and road markings, will cost £120,000.
Regarding the reduced limits a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "West Yorkshire Police supports any measures which are intended to make roads safer for all.”
All new housing developments to have 'default' 20mph speed limit
When the Telegraph & Argus asked if the police would be involved in any particular enforcement activities this week, they suggested contacting Bradford Council.
A Council spokesman said: “Twenty mile per hour zones are a proven way of making our roads safer. The zones will help make the city centre a safer and more attractive place for pedestrians and cyclists as well as making it generally more inviting to live, work and visit.
“The new zones have been added to streets where average speeds are already below 30mph due to factors such as on-street parking, road layout and traffic calming measures.
“The zones are clearly marked with numerous speed limit signs and road markings, so will be very obvious to drivers.”
