A 17-year-old youth has appeared before Bradford Youth Court accused of murder.
The teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is accused of killing Peter Ellerton, 41, who died at Bradford Royal Infirmary from stab wounds he suffered in a disturbance in the city's Canterbury estate late on Monday.
Magistrates today remanded the teenager in custody until his next appearance at the Youth Court on Tuesday.
An application for bail by his solicitor Philippa Murray was rejected by Krishnan Mohanty, chairman of the youth bench.
Brief details of the case were told to the court by prosecutor Peter Hampton.
The teenager sat in the dock handcuffed to security staff during the 90-minute long hearing.
Before the court hearing Stephen Ellerton, 50, the brother of Mr Ellerton, who was commonly known as Pip, said he had led a "troubled life" battling drug and alcohol addiction and had spent time in prison.
He said: "He'd had his ups and downs and he'd been a silly lad but all that's in the past now. Some people will be glad he's gone but he's paid his penance now."
He added that his brother had never got over the death of his mother Mavis of cancer six years ago. "At least he's with her now. Whenever things went wrong he wished she was with him, he's got that wish now," he said.
Mr Ellerton, of Little Horton Lane, Little Horton, Bradford, was the second youngest of seven boys and four girls.
Stephen Ellerton said: "The last time I saw Pip was just hours before he died we were talking over next door's fence where he'd been staying. We'd not seen eye-to-eye recently but at least we'd managed to make our peace. I'm glad about that."
Although Mr Ellerton had a flat in Little Horton, he regularly stayed with family and friends on the estate despite being the target of verbal abuse, said his brother.
