PRIDE in ‘God’s Own County’ burns bright all year long, but Thursday will be the perfect way to mark all that's great about Yorkshire.

August 1 is Yorkshire Day and there’s plenty going on around the Bradford district to mark the occasion.

The White Rose of Yorkshire will be flying on all flagpoles across the district.

And if you’re out and about in Bradford city, be sure to listen out for the chimes of the City Hall clock, which will be playing a special rendition of the unofficial Yorkshire anthem ‘On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at’.

In the evening, the city will glow yellow, white and blue as lights on the city hall clock, Margaret McMillan Towers and the Forster Square arches will shine in the traditional Yorkshire colours.

Meanwhile, Bolling Hall will host its annual Yorkshire Day event from 11am until 4pm. This year has a special hat theme. There will be a hat throwing competition, hat-craft activities, a hat trail and a one-day only hat exhibition in the hall.

The Cartwright Hall Art Gallery is holding an edible art workshop to celebrate the day, as part of the ‘We Are West Yorkshire’ joint exhibition programme.

Artist Musarat Raza will host the workshop between 11am and 3pm, where visitors will be able to design patterns and decorations for biscuits.

The biscuits can then be enjoyed with a free cup of tea, sponsored by Hoogly Teas, which are hand blended, ethically sourced and fairly traded.

The We are West Yorkshire: Bradford people exhibition celebrates Bradford glass designer Kalim Afzal, Manningham-based photographer Nudrat Afza and world famous Bradford born-artist David Hockney, among others.

It also showcases innovators such as Sir Titus Salt, Christopher Pratt and the Bronte sisters, as well as the reformists Miriam Lord, Margaret McMillan and Richard Oastler, who were all from the Bradford district.

The display also includes a selection of watercolours of Bradford street characters and dignitaries of the Victorian period, by John Sowden.

Libraries will also be marking the day.

Wibsey Library will hold a Yorkshire-themed teddy bears’ picnic, and the Local Studies Library, in the old Central Library, is having a “right Yorkshire Brew” where all donations made from tea and biscuits will go towards the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

Wyke and Eccleshill Library will also be flying the colours of Yorkshire in a special display.

The Ilkley Lido will be decked out in Yorkshire’s colours and the indoor and outdoor pool will be offering promotional swim activities including reduced prices and two for one in the off-peak swim times.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “There’s lots to do all over the district this Yorkshire Day and we hope everyone will get along to one of their local events.

“If you can’t make it to one of the many fun events and activities, I’d encourage everyone to mark the occasion by getting out and seeing our beautiful region."
