HUNDREDS of well-wishers turned out to welcome home cricket world cup hero Adil Rashid tonight, with family and close friends queuing up to sing his praises.
After partying with his team-mates, friends and family - and even making a whistle-stop visit to Downing Street to see the Prime Minister - the Heaton-born leg spinner was back in Bradford this evening.
There was no big civic reception (that comes later) but a visit to his uncle's shop, Miss Pennys, in Duckworth Lane, where he was mobbed by adoring fans.
Rashid’s uncle, Saleem Mohammed, helped organise the leg-spinner’s homecoming.
He said: "Adil’s a really shy guy so this is nice for him.
"This is Adil’s community, he grew up on these streets.
"He still shops around here and we wanted all the kids in the commmunity to get involved, rather than have a private party.”
Good friend Amjad Hussain said: "Adil’s done good and his family love him.”
"Back in the day his grandad was the one who taught him how to bowl.”
He laughed: "I can't believe that we've brought it home. Adil's helped us win the World Cup and us British Asians are right happy.
"We're having a good party later."
Yunus Lunat is a close friend of Adil’s uncle Javed Bashir.
He said: “Look at all the flags we have here, we’re as British or English as the next person.
“The celebrations of the British Pakistanis after the final were fantastic and Adil's a good role model for them.
"But the wider society has got to buy into that too."
Councillor Arshad Hussain (Labour, Toller) said: "The Toller ward and the whole city is proud of him.
"He’s an amazing role model for the kids.”
