NEW plans for a £2.5 million “sports village” that would include new cycle facilities, sports pitches and a community building, have been revealed.

The Wyke Sports Village will be built on the site of the old Wyke Manor School, and after a public consultation last month a full planning application for the major development has now been submitted.

The original plans for the site were approved in 2016, but a fire in one of the existing sports buildings on the site, and its subsequent demolition, meant the scheme had to go back to the drawing board.

The planned sale of the Richard Dunn sports centre put extra pressure on the Council to deliver the ambitious project - as it meant new cycle facility was needed to replace the one that would be lost with the leisure centre’s sale.

Although Richard Dunn is being replaced with a new leisure centre - Sedbergh Sports Centre, that will not include cycle facilities.

The application says: “There is strong support for the project from British Cycling, Sport England and the Football Foundation.

“There is strong community support for the development particular within local cycling and sports clubs. Particular attention should be made to the positive community consultation feedback.

“There is demand for high -quality cycling facilities in Bradford due to the forthcoming closure of Richard Dunn Sports Centre and the associated cycling facilities.

“Twinned with these, there is a demand to relocate a number of cycling and sporting clubs.

“Development on the site will have to be very carefully designed and constructed to complement the local context and landscape character of the site.”

The plan includes a cycle circuit in the northern half of the site, an artificial grass pitch and three natural turf pitches in the southern half with an area for other cycling facilities.

The cycle track will be open to the public at any time unless it has been booked for training or an event.

The community building will provide changing on the lower ground floor and an entrance and multipurpose space on the upper level.

The application says the new building “provides an excellent opportunity to be used as an event and hire space with panoramic views of the site.”

Planned opening hours for the site would be 8am to 10pm on Monday to Saturday and 8am to 8pm on Sundays.

A decision on the application is expected in July.
