For this week’s trip down memory lane we are taking you back to 1972, with one last look at Bradford’s historic Kirkgate Market before its 1973 demolition.
On Monday November 5, 1973 the Telegraph and Argus reported that thirty-three people had been arrested after an afternoon of demonstrations against the closure of Bradford’s century-old Kirkgate Market.
Police reinforcements were called, and demonstrators were led out and bundled into waiting vans as crowds jeered at the police officers near the market entrance. Thankfully most traders had already closed their stalls and left without taking part in the protest.
According to Mr. Taylor, secretary of the action group trying to save the market, the events were only intended to immobilise public opinion against the way the market had been condemned.
