PLANS to turn a former woodworkers' workshop into a residential development have been refused, with officers saying it would leave the building "unrecognisable."

The application for 246A Heaton Road in Manningham, formerly used by Bradford Woodworkers, would have seen the ground floor kept as a workshop but the upper floor extended and converted into residential.

It would have led to major changes to the outside of the building.

Takeaway plan for Manningham conservation area refused

The building is in the North Park Road Conservation Area and heritage officer H Meekings said: "The modest workshop on Heaton Road will be completely remodelled. The result is that the building will be unrecognisable and its traditional character will be, in my opinion, lost."

They said the workshops do need refurbishing, but this should be done in a "sensitive" manner.

The plans were refused because they "do not preserve or enhance the character and appearance of the host application building" in a Conservation Area.
