LOCAL slimmers are casting off their clothes for a worthy cause.

Slimming World members, including many of the clubs in our area including Saltaire, are recycling their clothes after losing the pounds and donating them to branches of CRUK to raise money for the cancer charity.

Last year's Clothes Throw campaign raised more than £3 million - now members are hoping to beat that target during Slimming World's golden year as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

To commemorate this special anniversary, there will be some golden bags with special prize draw entries for members up for grabs.

Slimming World consultant, Jan Carroll, who runs sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Caroline Street social club, Saltaire, says the Clothes Throw has grown in popularity since it began and was an incentive for those who have lost weight to get ride of their bigger clothes.

Jan says losing weight is also encouraging them to live healthier lifestyles to help prevent certain types of cancer.

Did you know? The annual Big Slimming World Clothes Throw launched in 2013.

It is slimming World's biggest fundraiser of the year inspiring consultants and members throughout the UK to donate the clothes they've slimmed out of to be sold in 600 Cancer Research UK shops nationwide.

In 2018, Slimming World donated more than £3m worth of stock. Each of the filled bags is worth around £25 to the charity.

To celebrate Slimming World’s 50th birthday in 2019, this year the slimmers will also be in with a chance of finding a special golden bag. If they do, they’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a personal styling experience and shopping trip in London.

As well fundraising, the partnership between Slimming World and Cancer Research UK aims to raise awareness of the links between obesity and cancer. Since 2012 the partnership has generated more than £12million through various campaigns.
