A family of four were taken to hospital following a fire in the children's bedroom today.

Two boys, aged 11 and 13, woke to smoke in their room at Summerlands Grove, West Bowling, at 4.25am.

Their father, who was up and shaving, quickly got his wife and children out of the house and then went back in to the semi-detached house to try to fight the blaze himself.

He was beaten back by flames and emergency services were called.

The family were taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters from Odsal attended and battled the blaze for two hours.

The children's bedroom was gutted and the home was smoke-logged.

The blaze broke out following an electrical fault.

Crew manager Phil Harney praised the man for getting his family out first and then attempting to put out the fire.

He said: "He did absolutely the right thing.

"The family had smoke detectors which did their job, especially at that time in the morning.

"That type of fire can result in serious injury, if not death."
