A NEW cafe will be built in one of Bradford's most popular visitor attractions.

Bradford Council plans to spend £100,000 on creating a new cafe area in Cartwright Hall - the Council run art gallery in Lister Park.

The Council has recently announced cuts to the museum service, along with plans to bring in more revenue from its four free museums and galleries.

This could include renting out the venues for events, and the Council believes a new cafe could make the gallery more attractive for events like weddings and conferences.

Funding for the project was recently approved by the Council's Executive, with a report into the proposal describing it as "an invest to save scheme and the additional income will fund the capital financing costs over ten years."

A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “Cartwright Hall Art Gallery was originally built with a ‘refreshment’ room and many art galleries and museums offer a café so we believe the proposal makes good sense.

“The café could provide a pleasant space for people to meet, relax and discuss art whilst enjoying food and refreshments.

“The proposal could generate much needed income to support the museum which is under increasing financial pressure.

“The new facilities could allow us to explore additional revenue operations including hiring the space for events, meetings and weddings, and displaying and selling local artists’ work.”
