A GROUP of fundraisers for the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal (IKCA) have reached their goal of trekking to Everest Base Camp for the charity.
The group were on the road for a week, weathering the harshest conditions any of them had ever experienced through the breath-taking Himalayan landscape.
Out of the volunteers who took part in Bradford-based IKCA’s Everest Base Camp Challenge, two fell ill with altitude sickness and were airlifted back to receive emergency medical aid, just before reaching base camp.
Out of the 10 members who did make it, two others fell ill shortly after reaching their destination. They too were airlifted back to safety.
The trek was a fundraiser for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore and Peshawar, named after the mother of former cricketer, one-time Chancellor of Bradford University and now Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is the founding chairman of the charity.
The hospital is the only one in Pakistan which offers free cancer treatment to patients who cannot afford it.
