Clive Eager could possibly hold the record for reading the Craven Herald at the highest point after taking a copy of the Telegraph & Argus’ sister paper on a trip of a lifetime to Tanzania with his daughter, Stephanie.
After reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro - at 5,895 metres,(19,341ft) Africa’s highest point and the world’s highest free-standing mountain, the Skipton man took a few minutes to catch up on all the news back home.
“The Craven Herald went with us all the way. You may be able to take the man out of Skipton, but you can’t take Skipton out of the man,” he said.
Their 18-day odyssey took in Kilimanjaro National Park, Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, an extinct volcanic caldera, and Zanzibar Island.
The self-employed electrician and his daughter, who holds a Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology and works in the north-east with young offenders - are much travelled together, having previously visited Poland, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Peru, Argentina and Brazil.
Clive said: “The whole idea came after a conversation with a local guy, ex-paratrooper Victor Titerenko, a veteran of several Kilimanjaro summit, Inca trail and Everest base camp treks, along with numerous other extreme challenge achievements. He’s a qualified guide who has shown a lot of guys a lot of things. I would never have thought of attempting it prior to that chat.”
